I was once told by many women that garage sales are not worth your time. These women clearly never lived fifteen minutes away from Juarez!
But let me start at the beginning.
We had set everything up for our garage sale starting at 10am today. At 6:45am, our doorbell rang. Our lights were off. The alarm had just gone off. Harper and Colin were still sleeping. Let's just not answer it. Ding dong. It rang again. There's NO stuff outside our house. The only evidence of a garage sale today are the signs we placed down the street with our address (which also clearly stated the time). We're definitely not answering. Ding dong. Ok, we're answering.
At the door were two women who spoke hardly any English.
This was the first sign that our morning would be interesting.
We had sold nearly everything that would sell by 9am. We made almost $400 before our garage sale was officially supposed to start.
I know VERY little Spanish, but what I know was definitely put to the test today. And they certainly got a kick out of me stumbling my way through!!
Apparently, there are a bunch of people who come to El Paso from Mexico specifically for the yard sales! Sometimes they are getting things for themselves. Other times, they're looking for things they can sell in Mexico. We met a pastor who tries to find things to sell to help his ministry. He was incredibly nice and comes around the neighborhood a lot doing random jobs to earn a living.
At one moment, Jamey grabbed me and pointed. One of the women had picked Harper up right out of her seat and was holding her and bouncing with her because she was crying. THE BABY IS NOT FOR SALE!!
The morning was full of broken English, broken Spanish and MANY hand gestures (and thank God for the kids who knew a little more English than their parents)! But we feel that it was worth our time for sure.
We do still have some things to get rid of, but hopefully craigslist will help get rid of the rest.
And now we have right at $400 that we didn't have before!
